Celestalia
The Starbound City of Caelandria, The Unmappable City

Location:
Nestled atop the towering Karnsaedra in the heart of Caelandria, Celestalia rises from the mountain’s base to its jagged peak, commanding the landscape with its intricate sprawl. Surrounded by lush forests, rivers, and meadows, the city is encased within an ancient wall, standing as both a protector and a testament to its origins.

Overview:
Known as The Starbound City, The Crown of Caelandria, and The Unmappable City, Celestalia is a city of contrasts and grandeur. It is renowned for its labyrinthine streets, vast layout, and its layered structure, which reflects both social and geographic divides:
The Common Quarters, at the mountain’s base, are home to laborers, artisans, and tradespeople. Life here is defined by resilience and industriousness, the streets bustling with commerce and daily survival.
The Central Quarters, midway up the mountain, serve as a vibrant hub of trade, culture, and craftsmanship. Merchants, scholars, and innovators mingle here, creating a dynamic and colorful district.
The Celestial Quarters, crowning the summit, house aristocrats, spiritual leaders, and the city’s elite. This district is a bastion of refinement and power, its spires reaching skyward as if to touch the stars.
The city has claimed every inch of Karnsaedra, from its roots to its heights, weaving itself into the mountain’s rugged terrain. Its vastness and winding cobbled alleys have earned it the nickname The Unmappable City, as even seasoned residents often find themselves lost in its depths.

Materials and Architecture:
Celestalia’s unique architecture reflects its celestial aspirations and natural harmony:
Weathered Oak: Harvested from the forests of Eldakrag, this resilient wood is used extensively in construction and adds a warm, organic aesthetic to the city.
Smokestone (Basalt): Quarried from Karnsaedra, this dark volcanic stone forms the city’s foundations, walls, and iconic structures, lending a sense of permanence and mystery.
At the city’s heart stands the High Keep, its Heavenward Facade adorned with astral motifs and carved symbols of celestial lore. Encircling the city’s base is the ancient wall, built of Smokestone and etched with intricate patterns, a symbol of both security and endurance.

Cultural and Spiritual Identity:
Celestalia’s culture is deeply tied to the celestial. The Celestial Canopy, a tree of silver-gold leaves planted by the eight founding families, is both a physical and spiritual heart of the city. Its roots entwine with glowing shards of celestial crystal embedded in the soil, symbolizing the city’s mystical origins.
Festivals and rituals celebrate the celestial bodies, with particular reverence given to the twin moons, Elúna and her fallen sister. Starwatching, hymns, and artistic expressions rooted in celestial themes permeate daily life, connecting the people to the heavens above.

Historical Foundations:
The city’s origins are steeped in legend, as recounted in the Fable of Eldakrag and Karnsaedra:
Faced with despair, the people of Eldakrag ascended the sacred mountain guided by the wisdom of eight families—Caelyra, Vaeloria, Orellian, Zephyra, Glavielle, Myrridion, Thaloriel, and Lumiria. Their unity and perseverance led them to a plateau, where they planted the seed of the Celestial Canopy, establishing the foundation of Celestalia.

The founding families’ unique skills and traditions shaped the city, from its architecture to its cultural life. Their legacy lives on in the festivals, stories, and governance of modern Celestalia.

The Underoak:
Beneath Celestalia lies the Underoak, a network of tunnels and chambers carved into the heart of Karnsaedra. Shrouded in mystery, it is said to harbor remnants of the city’s magical past. While some dismiss the Underoak as mere legend, its existence lingers in whispered tales, hinting at ancient secrets hidden beneath the mountain.

Economy and Trade:
Celestalia’s economy thrives on its skilled artisans, its exports of crafted goods, and the resources of Karnsaedra. The city’s unique currency—Copper Crescents, Silver Selenians, and Golden Gibbous—reflects its celestial themes and supports a robust internal and external trade network.

Districts of Celestalia:
Common Quarters: The industrious foundation of the city, where life is defined by hard work and resilience.
Central Quarters: A bustling hub of commerce, culture, and innovation, connecting all tiers of society.
Celestial Quarters: The pinnacle of refinement and privilege, symbolizing the city’s aspiration to transcend earthly limits.
